"Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it” -William Penn
William Penn was a Quaker, he was even a good friend of the founder of Quakers. The Independence Hall Association’s Ushistory.org says he received the Province of Pennsylvania from King Charles II as a paid debt to his father. This was also a way to get rid of the religious radicals in England, by shipping them off to a different land. Penn allowed Pennsylvania to be a democracy along with freedom of religion. In his quote, "Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it,” Penn expresses the balance of justice and obedience in society. He uses this quote to reflect on the injustice he received in England for his beliefs. He emphasizes that everybody, no matter what title they hold, is subject to the law of justice. Justice is a moral standard we humans have. It is what helps keep a stable society. However, in order for justice to be served properly, we need to take responsibility for our actions. The price for justice is to be obedient within the laws. Laws of morality and laws of the government. I have seen this truth everywhere. An extreme example is a guy I met once who didn’t really care for any laws. He was bad news so I never saw him again. He was a self-proclaimed drug dealer and was obviously the type of person that I should stay away from. Eventually I heard that he tried to rob a small convenience store with a mask and gun. He wasn’t very smart to begin with and ran away on foot. He was eventually caught and went to prison. This goes to show, he wasn’t morally straight and didn’t care for the law, eventually justice caught up with him and he is facing the consequences.
