Reading Literacy Narrative

As a child, my mother read to me different stories before bedtime. She would read a large variety of stories, from Nancy Drew to Disney Princesses. When given assignments to read in the past, I usually skim texts, unless it is something that really peaks my interest. I am sure I have been taught different strategies on how to read different texts, however none have really stuck with me. I have found that when I am told what to read, such as a specific book, I have hard time enjoying the story as much. There have been some exceptions, however those exceptions really only happened when I had the choice of what to read or the selection was similar to my tastes of books. I usually lean towards the fiction/ young adult fiction books. I am also interested in biographies/ autobiographies. One of my favorite books is Wild by Cheryl Strayed. Her story really caught my attention and her writing brought her journey to life. Alongside books, I read many articles from a variety of topics. I usually find the articles on online magazines or news websites. I do not listen to audiobooks, but I know they are accessible at the library or even online. Reading well was very important in middle and high school. Students have to read their textbooks, and other material that their teacher assigns. Being able to read and comprehend that information is what helps students pass their courses, especially in AP classes. For advanced classes, teachers give many assignments where students have to read certain books and other high level material. Then, teachers test whether the student understood the material by assigning essays and other projects. I believe that reading well will aid me and other students greatly in college. In my opinion, with the responsibility to read so much for our classes, being able to read well is essential. Similar to high school, without the ability to read and understand, it would be very difficult to be able to pass the course without understanding the material. I do not have any diagnosed reading difficulties.
