Communicating as a Professional

Entrepreneur, business philosopher, and motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, “Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people” (Jim). Communication creates connections in everyday life and it is important to communicate efficiently and professionally. Facing employer expectations, the skills required for specific professions, and personal plans are all factors that assist in the reality that communication is essential in all aspects of life.

Kyle Weins and Susan Adams both have articles on why good grammar is necessary in the workplace. Weins points out that good grammar shows reliability in the workplace, especially on the internet where everything is based off how the workplace presents itself on screen. Along with your level of intelligence, using correct grammar shows professionalism. If you do not have good grammar by the time you are working, it shows that your ability to learn something common and simple is minimal. How are employers supposed to believe you can learn new and complex information if you cannot even use grammar correctly? (Weins). Adams adds her reasons good grammar is essential to the work place. She believes that by using good grammar when speaking, your sentences flow better without awkward pauses. By having your sentences flow better, you show a sign of confidence in what you are doing. Good grammar also shows a sign of respect for who you are relaying your information to. It shows that you respect their intelligence as well as your own (Adams).

Good grammar is a part of communication and in the field of advertising and marketing, communication is key. According to the Occupation Outlook Handbook from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to be in this profession, at least a bachelor’s degree is required. The most popular degrees are journalism, business, or a degree that focuses on expanding creativity. All types of communication are needed in this field. The main goal of an advertiser is to reach out to the public, take something they want, and sell it to them. To do that, it takes verbal skills to not only sell to the public but first to a client. Presentation is a major factor in selling an advertisement campaign. To sell a campaign, you must be able to listen to what the client wants, tie it to what the public wants, and use your presentation skills to close the deal. In order to know what the public wants, you must read for research. Read what the hottest trends are, what does the public want you to sell to them? You must also read over business plans and legal documents. Advertisers and marketers gain access to the public through all types of media. They utilize the radio, television, newspapers, magazines, and most efficiently through social media. An advertiser/marketer should know how to use media to sell their product in a smart and interesting way to capture the public’s attention. Some of the most basic software can be used to create the necessary papers and power points needed to present to clients. Other computer programs that can also be used to fulfill their campaign needs. Creative writing can be beneficial when creating a campaign as well as presenting to clients. Being able to write up and review business plans, budgets, and other legal documents would be very beneficial. Existing and potential clients will be reading your work as well as co-workers and company superiors. Eventually your work will also make its way to the public. Having good grammar is essential to show your ability to stay organized and professional. Good grammar is needed in not only writing, but also when speaking. You must speak professionally, confident, and clear, especially when selling your campaign to a client. There are many countless journals that are focused on advertising and marketing. They include all aspects, new findings of each respective field that occur over time. When it comes to advertising and marketing, being able to communicate properly is what it is all about (Advertising).

While looking on into the future of being a businesswoman, I realize having communication skills are required in any field. I feel I already have good quality skills, however, I know that this specific class and being in college will improve these skills. First, being in this class and having to work in groups helps interpersonal skills. In college and in the workplace, there is always interactions with other people. By working in groups, teamwork skills are enhanced. Working with multiple people brings me more experience working with diversity. Those teamwork skills also aid in being an engaged listener. In order to work smoothly as a team, it is necessary to listen to others, work with what they have to say, include your own ideas and work together to achieve a goal. Especially at Thomas Nelson, I work with many different groups, it is important that everyone is able to listen and work together. Writing is another type of communication that is imperative in the workplace. Writing properly includes grammar, punctuation, and style. Improving all types of communication skills can always contribute to an advertising and marketing career. This class continues to improve those simple communication skills. Higher level education reinforces those skills and keeps constant professionalism, perfect for future employment.

In conclusion, communication with others brings unity as well as diversity. In order to have both, those skills are needed to create the network that connects person to person, company to company, and country to country. Employers expect employees to have good grammar to show they can work professionally no matter what field of work. Jobs such as advertising and marketing revolve around communication in every aspect. Those skills are used not only advertising and marketing, but all careers. Being in this class and in college as a whole, improves these imperative skills. As Rhon expressed, every opportunity should be taken to expand communication skills.
